A fingernail moon grins in the night sky
wearing a pendant, a sparkling point of light
Evening arrives, like a girl going to the prom
The boy will come, awkward and handsome
in his rented tuxedo. He will hand the girl
his heart, but she will not know what to do,
wishing for an orchid.
This is a Friday Flash Fiction 55. If you want to tell a story in exactly 55 words, post it and go tell the G-Man.
And with that, it seems that I have used up my supply of words today. I’ll leave you with a photo of the bright faces of periwinkle and a question: Do you remember your first prom?

wow, beautifully descriptive.
I enjoyed your words, especialyl the ending. We didn't have proms when we were young though i think schoos are starting to hold them these days.
A bit romantic for my crustier tastes Chris but beautifully said none the less. Great images of the nightly prom.
Interesting - we've both personified the day, although yours is still an innocent. My first prom - he had long sideburns (it was the fashion), and I had an up-do. Tres West Virginia chic! He, he!
Pretty periwinkles look like innocence to me :)
nice 55...a wee bit sad...for him, but glad she knows what she wants...
It's funny you bring this up as it is 25 years since I attended my senior prom. Unfortunately, I can not say it was the memorable event it should have been. I had already been drinking for a few years at that time & that evening was no exception.I'm just happy today to say that I am here 25 years later. (((HUGS)))
That's a wonderful story (I refuse to call it anything but a story, because it conveys as much as any story should). I can almost *see* the girl looking at the heart and wondering what on earth she should do with it.
And lovely periwinkles. We have them in India too, but only the pink, white and red ones. Never knew there were blue/ violet ones.
How true in life - we are given the most special gift of all - only to be blind to it - hoping for something quite insignificant!
Beautiful 55!
First of all I remember my first prom in spades. What magic!!
Second, I love this 55. Just perfect.
PG
Beautiful imagery there, I could picture the whole scene.
Before I became jaded, my first prom is the best!
check out my my 55 FFF

Wow! How could I forget it? "Starry, Starry Night" in a powder blue tuxedo!!!
To be so young and clueless - a sweet and nostalgic 55!
I barely remember my first semi-formal dance - we didn't really have proms where I'm from. But I'm pretty sure I was just as clueless back then.
I like how your mind works. Fingernail moon segues into prom jitters. Wonderful.
Excellent! Especially the last line.
Yes, I do remember. Thanks for bringing up the memory. It was a good time.
Very well done and eloquently expressed
That's a wonderful 55.
I saw them in the sky last night...I'm so glad you found inspiration there.
Romance, anticipation and innocence in the air. WOW. I like orchids too. Lovely pic.

The poor lad. Great 55. My 55 is HERE.
Fingernail moons...that's great and this is so lovely with longing, hope and breath all in one 55 word poem...amazing!
How about the part where he returns the tux to the rental agency with puke all over the sleeve?
Excellent 55 Chris...You Rock!
Have a Kick Ass Week-End...G
I saw that moon grinning at all of us.
I had not been here for a few days, you do live in some most beautiful country. And i love your mother, smelling the sound! She is more sane than many of us, saying such a thing.
Yes, I remember my prom and the beautiful dress chosen by my date. I didn't forget the orchid.
I like your descriptions. Fingernail moon....awkward and handsome.
I remember my one and only prom, my senior year. I went with who became my first wife.
That fingernail moon was out there again tonight, holding in all the good luck, like a smiley face.
And....of COURSE I remember my first prom, and all the others, TOO! Ya think I'm old or somthing? Hmmmmm?
(What are all these flowers doing to the right of where I'm writing?) Is there a funeral here or something?
What? What ABOUT "old"...what would you know ANYWAY, Ma'am? Are you "old" or something?
--grin!
PEACE!
HERE is my BLONG
Wonderful 55, Chris. I am just reading it tonight, after our wonderful meeting for lunch today. I loved Templeton! What a beautiful area and finally getting to see you was so nice. We will absolutely have to do it again!
There is an award for you on my blog.
Oh yes I remember. The boy who secretly had my heart was away, working at a summer job already. (We had late May proms, and he was in university.) Someone else asked and I said sure, I'd go with him. Then the boy I loved showed up out of the blue, came back from his work up north to ask me to go to the prom. Ouch. He ended up going with someone else. I watched him from across the room. We never did hook up. The pain, the pain.
What a relief to be a grown-up, now.
I have been gazing at our fingernail moon lately1 I like to think of it as the Cheshire Cat in the sky! (I saw Alice this week). I needed a positive 55 after I wrote mine...thanks!!!
♥namaste♥
This one was sweet and made me smile..thanks!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Really good 55! :-)
