Update: 6 a.m.

Haven't slept all night. Sitting here in the rainy dark with an earache throbbing in my head.
I had a shock this morning when voicing my own philosophy to myself: It could always be worse, so praise God it isn't!
I could be entombed in Haiti.
Puts everything in perspective.
Forgive my sometimes dismal outlook. I think so small sometimes. Here comes a giant bolt of lightning, and thunder cracks. It's awesome. After so long without rain, this storm system is magnificent! (Sudden thought: should I get off the computer?).
More gratitude:
* My mother is well-housed and comfortable as she slides into Alzheimer's.
* I can just get in the car and drive to a doctor if I wish to, for treatment.
* I am warm and dry as a storm rages outside.
* God is answering prayers in Haiti. So many stupendous reports of His providence are on the internet. Read here how Kim and Patrick were able to slip through the jammed airport to meet their incoming supply plane.

Gratitude doesn't soothe an earache but it does soothe a restless and tired soul. I hope you have a nap or a good night's sleep while the rain soothes the earth.

But then another 6.1 magnitude quake in Haiti this morning!
Those poor people, I pray for them.

Somehow you make the rainy dark with an earache sound peaceful and right. Nice.

Enchanted Oak...I am a friend in blogland of Carmen and she mentioned you in a comment..So I had to come and meet you. The connection is that we both live on the Central Coast. I am in SLO. Are you in Paso? And you love Barbara Kingsolver..Her Animal Vegetable Miracle changed my life. We lived in Cambria for 27 years and in the summer of 2007 moved to SLO so I could garden....

When we lived in Cambria I used to go to Cambria Writers Workshop. There were several writers in there from Paso. Wondered if you knew any of them.

Carmen mentioned that she might be in the Central Coast in March and mentioned lunch...we will see if it works out...

Stay warm and dry on this rainy day. We are so lucky to have shelter and food and water...my heart goes out to Haiti....

Hope to hear from you.

I could also be rotting and entombed there. I am so thankful that I am above ground and in good health today. There is much to be grateful for. Take care Chris.

Chris...

Once again, everything's relative, isn't it? I am staying awake with you a lot lately. The sleepless beast stalks me from time to time...last night I slept fitfully and awoke crying, with my husband holding me saying wake up, it's a bad dream, wake up....

It was a violent and hopeless nightmare and I couldn't wake up, couldn't quite drag myself to the surface for several minutes.

Maybe staying awake isn't so bad....

Thinking of you...

A little rain is good...this is way too much way too fast. The CHP were escorting cars on the 133 today because of hydroplaning (sp?)

They say another bigger storm tomorrow for us...maybe that's what you're getting already up north.

Grateful to be dry and warm. I hope you got that ear looked at today. Sweet dreams!

Hi Chris, you wrote this at 6AM Wednesday and here I am finally reading it at 2AM Thursday. By now, I hope your earache is long gone! We are certainly being deluged further north of you and have had a good bit of thunder and lightning. I did go over to the Pacifica coast ( five miles from me ) to take some pictures of the wild surf yesterday - it was really magnificent! Glad there were no idiot surfers out there as often come out in this kind of weather.

Slowly, Haiti is getting some relief, thank God!!!

I always get off the computer when we have summer storms (lately we've become a tornado zone, for some reason). It's always a good idea.

Yes. Haiti certainly makes you realize what we have and take for granted.
